Seen in My Room: Utagawa Kunisada’s Untitled

Untitled

歌川 (Utagawa) 国貞 (Kunisada)

Woodcut

20.5 x16.5 in

Gift of John A. Welsh III, Class of 1959

This Untitled piece of art by 歌川 (Utagawa) 国貞 (Kunisada) hangs above my bed and is the first thing you see upon entering the room. This woodblock piece from the 1800’s was a gift to Davidson College from John A. Welsh III, Class of 1959. I picked this piece because of its cool muted colors that contrast very well with all the warmness of my room. In this piece you can see two female beauties which is a characteristic of the ukiyo-e theme that 歌川 (Utagawa) 国貞 (Kunisada) was known for. Thanks to Davidson’s ArtMate program I can appreciate this piece of art everyday from my room.

Hear from other Davidson ArtMate participants:

Stephanie Ortiz chose this Andy Warhol Polaroid titled “Unidentified Woman (Ornate Necklace)”. She chose this photo because of the ambiguity of the photo and its possibility of empowering women.

Tate Peterson chose this woodcut piece by an unknown artist. Tate was drawn to this specific piece because of the “feline characteristics”.
