Meet Molly Smith, one of our new interns on staff at the Van Every/Smith Galleries!
Molly Smith is a Sophomore at Davidson College from Nashville, Tennessee. She is a Classical Languages & Literature major. Molly wanted to work in the gallery because of her work at home. In Nashville, Molly teaches kids art. Having a job in tune with the craft side of things made her crave a focus on art’s conceptual side. Molly believes museum spaces are already designed to spur ideas and questions, but getting to see the back of the tapestry — perusing the gallery archive or watching a show come together — feels incredibly rewarding to her.
Learn more about Molly:
Who is your favorite artist?
“Eric Carle. If you have ever read “The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse”, you know how much Carle celebrated color. His process was playful and completely his own.”
What is your earliest memory of art?
“I remember garnering a lot of status (in the first grade) from my drawing of a butterfly. The drawing ended up winning the school competition and was on display at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville. I try not to think about the fact that my art career will never reach such a height again.”
What is your favorite piece of art on campus?
“Sarah Zhang ’23 and Isabel Smith ’24 curated a show in the lobby of Chambers. You should go see it.”
You can check out this exhibition here:
What is your favorite part about working in the art gallery so far?
“The gallery is not confined to the VAC: exhibits appear in other academic buildings and sculpture gardens. I love that the place I get to work at spans the whole campus.”
What are you most excited to do in the art gallery or in art in general this semester?
“The Senior Studio Art Major shows! I am blown away every time.”
Feel free to come chat with Molly or any of our other interns Mon-Friday 10-5 and Sat-Sunday 12-4.
