Intern Spotlight Fall 2024

Meet our team of incredible interns at the Van Every/Smith Galleries on campus!

Hajar Hussein

Hajar Hussein is a sophomore educational policy and mathematics double major from Jacksonville, FL. This is her second year interning at the galleries. Her favorite gallery event is ArtMate, and she is especially excited for the new senior shows this year!

Gaby Sanclimenti

Gaby Sanclimenti is a senior psychology major and art history minor from Doylestown, PA. This is her third year interning at the galleries. Her favorite past exhibition was Homecoming: Art by Alumni in the fall of 2023, for which she helped write art labels as part of the show and catalog. Over the summer, Gaby spent time in Copenhagen, Denmark, visiting as many art museums as she could and eating all of the pastries she could find.

Audrey Cobb

Audrey Cobb is a senior anthropology major from Charlotte, NC. Their favorite past exhibit was Jacolby Satterwhite’s Finding Home Again (on view in the spring of 2023) which inspired them to join the gallery staff for the first time this year. Over the summer, Audrey visited Rehoboth Beach in Delaware.

Courtney Lassiter

Courtney Lassiter is a sophomore studio art and film/digital studies double major from Four Oaks, NC. This is her first year interning at the galleries, and she credits her time working with the North Carolina Museum of Art during high school as her reason for pursuing this position, particularly “as someone with a creative career in mind!” Courtney spent the summer doing art historical research in Bosnia and Herzegovina and filming a documentary in Berlin, Germany.

Rory Mullis

Rory Mullis is a junior biology and intended neuroscience/genetics major from Mooresville, NC. This is his third year interning at the galleries. His favorite event is ArtMate because “people are always full of energy and excited to pick out a piece knowing they’ll get to bring it home.” This semester, Rory will be hosting the the annual Queer Mentorship Program (Sponsored by YANASH), and encourages any queer or questioning students to apply!

Caleb Machorro

Caleb Machorro is a first year from Thomasville, NC. While currently undecided, he is leaning towards majoring in religious studies or history. His first interest in art originated from comic books and comic strips, “particularly the style utilized in classic strips such as Little Nemo or Calvin and Hobbes,” as well as traditional styles of animation. His interest then expanded across movements and mediums after discovering Pop Art, which, to him, “combined the elements of pop culture with the sensibilities of serious art.” For his first year as an intern, Caleb is excited to begin his Davidson journey and meet new people through class, clubs, and, of course, the gallery.

Victoria Spadacenta

Victoria Spadacenta is a sophomore art history and psychology double major from Durham, NC. For her first year as an intern, she is “really excited to see and interact with student art, particularly the senior art exhibits!” This summer, Victoria visited the beach and found many shells and shark teeth.

Natalie Fox

Natalie Fox is a sophomore intended art history and English double major from Frederick, MD. This is her first year interning at the galleries. Her favorite art period is the Italian Renaissance. During the summer, Natalie went to six vintage car shows with her dad.

Oliver Poduschnick

Oliver Poduschnick is a senior economics and political science double major from Middlebury, VT. This is his fourth year as an intern. He enjoys impressionism and loves the senior art shows and annual student art exhibit at the galleries. Over the summer, Oliver had fun at a horse race with his friends.

Sarah Willoughby

Sarah Willoughby is a senior art history major from Greensboro, NC. This is her fourth year interning at the galleries. Her favorite past exhibition is The sun still rises in spite of everything from the spring of 2024, and she also loves to work and participate in ArtMate. This summer, Sarah worked as a curatorial intern at the Asheville Art Museum.

Izzy Hernandez

Izzy Hernandez is a senior environmental studies major on the natural science track and anthropology minor from Eden, NC. This is her third year interning at the galleries, where her favorite event is the annual student show. Izzy is most looking forward to taking her first art class this semester!

Keira Anderson

Keira Anderson is a first-year intended biology major on the pre-med track from Terre Haute, IN. This is her first year interning at the galleries. Her favorite artist is Claude Monet, who she finds to be “timeless.” During the summer, Keira shared that she “went hiking in Telluride, Colorado with my best friend/boyfriend. We also drove to Nashville and back in a night to see Noah Kahan. Definitely core memories.”

Saskia Sheinkman

Saskia Sheinkman is a senior art history major and English minor from New York, NY. This is her first year interning at the galleries. She is inspired by the work of prolific artists such as Ruth Asawa, Joan Mitchell, and Gustav Klimt. Saskia spent her summer interning at a gallery in New York, and she is now “looking forward to learning about the artwork in Davidson’s collection!”

Barbara Lopez

Barbara Lopez is a first-year intended computer science major and possible art minor from Wilson, NC. She enjoys artworks that include animals (particularly those with antlers), figures, and a heavy use of symbolism, particularly in the mediums of photography, digital illustrations, and paintings. For her first year interning at the galleries and being at Davidson, Barbara is most looking forward to working in the VAC gallery office (and, she says, surviving Humes).

Nike Keys

Nike Keys is a first-year intended biology major on the pre-med track from Columbus, GA. As a new intern, she is excited to surround herself with art everyday and “have the chance to engage with different styles and perspectives, continually learning from new works and artists.” On her favorite style of art, she says, “I’ve always been drawn to paintings that depict nature, especially water scenes. There’s something so mesmerizing about the way artists capture the flow, texture, and reflection of water, whether it’s a calm pond or a rushing river. That connection to nature is a big inspiration in my own painting, and it really motivates me to express those peaceful yet dynamic elements through my art.” Nike is hoping to find balance in her freshman year with a “focus on making and maintaining friendships while also carving out time for fun and relaxation.”

Come meet our interns and explore the galleries from 10-5 on Mondays-Fridays, 10-7 on Wednesdays, and 12-4 on Saturdays-Sundays!
