Meet sophomore intern Sarah Jackson from Johannesburg, South Africa! Working in both the studio art and economics departments here at Davidson, she is an important member of our intern staff.
Name: Sarah Jackson
Major/minor: Studio Art major and Economics major
Why did you intern in the gallery?: I wanted to try and understand a new part of the art world as well as get involved in another aspect of art at Davidson, outside from classes. I also wanted to learn more about Davidson’s art collection and love being around art!
What has been your favorite memory from your job?: I think helping Tintin Wulia, an artistsI who participated in the Back Artists Residency, finish her paintings just hours before the opening of the exhibition was a great experience although I was always terrified I was going to mess up one of her paintings!
Do you plan to pursue anything in the arts post-grad? If not, what are your plans?: I definitely want to do something in the arts after graduation but not exactly sure what yet. I would love to be an artist but I am also thinking about jobs in art advising as well as in galleries.
Favorite artist/work and why?: My favorite artists has been Nelson Makamo for a long time. I think I connect with his works firstly because he is from Johannesburg and his work is often portraits which is what I have been interested in for a long time. I am always amazed by the way his works can look so simple but have so much depth at the same time.
Hobbies?: Running, reading, painting
Little known fact about you?: I have been to 27 countries!
And finally, if you could have a meal with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?: William Kentridge. He is another South African artists who I have always looked to for inspiration and I am always curious about where he gets his ideas from as he includes so many different aspects in his works that all somehow connect and make sense to the viewer.
We look forward to continuing our introductions tomorrow!
