Happy weekend from all of us working remotely for the Van Every/Smith Galleries! we hope you are all staying healthy and safe. Here is a new intern introduction to add to your list of weekend reading. This week, meet junior Adrienne Lee!
Name: Adrienne Lee
Hometown: I am a nomad, but I always go back to South Korea or France.
Major/Minor: Studio Art major, Neuroscience minor
Why did you intern in the gallery?: I was overly thrilled to work and I remember I wanted to please Lia so badly! I was mainly curious about the behind-the-scenes ‘stuff’. I say ‘stuff’ because I had no idea what I would really be doing, but I did want to view an artwork through a different lens as an artwork handler in some way, not like a viewer at a gallery or a museum.
What has been your favorite memory from your job?: The gallery office has a timeless quality. I loved roaming around the artworks, assigning certain artworks to different places such as office spaces, academic buildings, etc. It is as if each artwork can serve yet another new purpose on campus, being re-appreciated by different individuals in a continuous cycle.
Do you plan to pursue anything in the arts post-grad? If not, what are your plans?: As a studio art major and neuroscience minor, I am unsure where that will take me exactly. But I hope to have a unique voice to share as an artist and be proud as a Davidson alum and to be grateful for everything I will have learned in a liberal arts education in Davidson.
Favorite artist/work and why?: Giacometti. Once you’ve encountered his works, it’s hard to un-see the formal qualities of his works in even the most irrelevant things you may be viewing.
Hobbies?: I cook like I make art – it’s abstract.
Little known fact about you?: My facts are like onions – you just have to keep peeling.
And finally, if you could have a meal with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?: I have been obsessed with stand up comedy recently, so I would love to get a meal with Sebastian Maniscalco. I want to test for how long we would be talking about the most ordinary thing.
