Poses and Projections: Portraits from the Davidson College Art Collection, a new exhibition at The Light Factory

The Van Every/Smith Galleries and The Light Factory are pleased to announce Poses and Projections, an exhibition of photography from the Davidson College Permanent Art Collection. The exhibition will be on view at the Light Factory from February 12, 2016 through March 25, 2016.

Co-curated by Lia Newman and Lili Corbus, Poses and Projections highlights 20th century portraits, including work by notable photographers such as Andy Warhol, Diane Arbus, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Robert Mapplethorpe, Mary Ellen Mark, Duane Michals, Philippe Halsman, Harry Callahan, and others. This diverse body of work represents the wide variety of perspectives creative photographers bring to their depictions of human subjects. From posed studio images of celebrities to candid shots of family life, from the documentary to the surreal, we see far more than mere visual descriptions of faces and bodies. The portraits in this show allude to deeper complexities: projections of ideals, surreal interiors of the self, and the nuances of social identity.

About the Collaborators:

The Van Every/Smith Galleries at Davidson College plays a fundamental role in the pedagogical life of Davidson College through the presentation, interpretation, and discussion of artworks in all media for students and members of the college community, as well as for national and international visitors to the campus.
