We invite all members of the campus and community to public events. Please follow this webpage for information.

The college’s collaboration with the Catawba Nation also is intended to facilitate research and service opportunities for students across majors and programs. Of equal importance, this collaboration also seeks to redress historical wrongs by approaching these opportunities ethically. This includes our awareness of histories of exploitation in some of our fields, attention to preparation and expectations, and respect for our Catawba partners’ resources, including cultural knowledge, time, and labor.

Students expressing interest in working on a Catawba topic for their thesis, capstone, or other independent research project should take HIS 248: Native South, which Dr. Rose Stremlau generally offers every other year, as preparation to learn about the history and culture of Indigenous people in this region.

The Catawba Nation has their own Cultural Center and Natural Resources Department. They have their own policies re: research. We ask that faculty advising students interested in writing theses, capstones, and other independent research projects that seek to include a Catawba component to contact Dr. Rose Stremlau during the spring of their junior year to review their proposals and circulate them to appropriate staff in the Catawba Nation, discuss their viability, and receive feedback from our community partner.

The Catawba Nation and Davidson College have a formal Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that specifies guidelines and responsibilities for all projects involving this collaboration; please consult the MOA as part of the proposal process. Stremlau can assist students with this process.
