Desiring Machine is an exhibition of Paula Gaetano Adi’s performance work entitled Desiring-Machine II (pique de carbón). Gaetano Adi will host a special performance from 7:45-8:30 p.m. during the October 24 opening reception. Born in San Juan, Argentina, Paula Gaetano Adi is an artist, researcher and educator working in sculpture, performance, interactive installation, and robotic agents. Using the human and nonhuman body as a point of departure, her work deals with different cultural studies of technoscience, particularly in regard to how its discursive effects and affects are inscribed in human subjectivity and how they can be reflected through art. Desiring Machine will be on view in the Smith Gallery of the Belk Visual Arts Center through December 13. Gaetano Adi curated Parodic Machines, a group exhibition on view concurrently in the Van Every Gallery. Gaetano Adi moderated a panel discussion with the Parodic Machines artists on Wednesday, October 23 at 6:00 p.m. in Semans Lecture Hall in the Belk Visual Arts Center.
