We are pleased to present Tyler Starr’s solo exhibition, Tyler Starr: Tales of the Future. Combining research, direct observation, and poetic associations, Starr’s mixed media works and artists books often rely on cross-references to better understand current social and political conundrums. Tales of the Future features a new comic-style artist book of the same name, two additional artist books, Flags, Placards, and Illicit Climbers of the Capitol Insurrection (January 6, 2021), Bank Tellers of America versus The Aryan Republican Army (1992-1996), and recent related digital prints and photogravures.
Starr, currently an Associate Professor of Studio Art at Davidson College, earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and a PhD in Studio Arts from the Tokyo University of Fine Arts where he was a recipient of the Japanese Ministry of Education Scholarship. Prior to his PhD studies, Starr was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, Krakow, Poland (1998). He was a Grant Wood Fellow at the University of Iowa (2011), a Christiania Researcher in Residence (2013), OMI International Arts Center Resident (2014), and a Fellowship Artist at the Kala Art Institute (2018). His work has been featured in exhibitions at Yale University’s Haas Arts Library, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Liège, Belgium, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan.
