Smile for the Picture

Smile for the Picture is a solo exhibition by Lucy Sexton ’16, and is part of an on-going series of Senior Studio Art Major exhibitions in the Edward M. Smith Gallery.

There are so many things left unsaid, hidden, or vaguely implied. We are taught to be “polite,” but sometimes politeness starts to feel like insincerity. As we surrender to politeness, we grow quiet. This silence facilitates peace yet also submission. Drowning in a flood of unspoken expectations, we put on facades and conform, juggling masks and personas. The only thing more uncomfortable than wishing someone would be honest, is actually confronting someone’s dishonesty. Spaces transform into stages and we perform for each other, playing the game and smiling for the camera.
