Last spring, many students interning in the Davidson College Art Galleries graduated. Some also went abroad for a semester or two. Fortunately, this was balanced out by a number of talented and enthusiastic new interns who are just starting this fall. Among these new interns are two friends, Alice Berndt ’20 and Sarah Jackson ’20. Sarah is a double major in Studio Art and Economics, while Alice is an English major and Art History minor.
Sarah enjoyed a particularly museum-rich summer this year! She pursued a course on “How the Art World Works,” provided by the Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York City. Living in New York made it possible for her to visit some of the leading art museums and galleries in the United States, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, the David Zwirner Gallery, and the Pace Gallery.
Sarah and Alice also took a trip together to visit the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town. Both reflected on the range of African artists represented at the ZMOCAA. Alice particularly enjoyed seeing Yinka Shonibare’s Adam and Eve, after the Galleries brought Shonibare to speak at Davidson last year!
Both Sarah and Alice expressed excitement to get more involved in the Davidson College Art Department through their internships here. Alice attended many gallery openings and artist talks last year and wants to see more of the “behind the scenes” work that makes such events possible. Sarah got a taste of the wide variety of careers one can find in the arts this summer, and she’s now eager to experience even more through her internship this year. Although these students are only sophomores, they are clearly already thinking ahead. We are excited to for the next few years of their Davidson tenure and lucky to have them at the Galleries!
