Whenever I walk by Waves III by Jaume Plensa, I feel like I have to stop and look at it. It’s a sculpture made up of letters and symbols from all sorts of languages, forming the shape of a person. Something about the way the letters come together makes it impossible to ignore. I feel drawn to it as if it’s quietly calling me to stop and pay attention.
The letters are from different alphabets, representing various languages and cultures. But together, they create a single figure to show that despite our different languages, we’re all connected. It gives the feeling that, deep down, we’re all the same. We might come from various places and speak different words, but there’s something universal in our shared humanity.
Waves III is more than just a piece of art; it’s a moment that stops me in my tracks and reminds me of the power of connection. By bringing together symbols worldwide, Plensa shows that we are all part of something bigger. Each time I pass by, I feel a mix of calmness and inspiration, grateful for the reminder that no matter our differences, we all share a common humanity.
