East Durham Love captures an incredibly intimate moment between two figures. In a darkly lit room with only the light from the window shining in, the woman figure, dressed in a simple white lacey dress with a decorative, shiny headpiece cradles the male figure. The male figure sits shirtless below her with his head to her stomach. The windows thick drapery gives a pattern to the background, but also significantly blocks light from entering the frame. The scene evokes an incredibly intimate moment between two lovers. The figures, although both have eyes closed, show incredible tenderness and love in this serene photograph.
Kennedi Carter is an American artist from Durham, North Carolina. Raised in the south, Carter’s work highlights Black love, hair, relationships, and trauma. All of her work, however, is rooted in Black creativity and confidence and the confidence and relationships with her subjects. Carter’s work has been shown nationally, including at the Gantt Center in Charlotte and the Rose Gallery in LA. She has also done extensive editorial work, including photographing Beyonce for the December 2020 edition of British Vogue.
